Tip: Customizing the Windows 7 Start Menu Power Button

How do you shut down your PC? Or do you just put it into standby or hibernate when you step away from it? Here’s a tip on how to accomplish either action more quickly.
When you click the Windows 7 Start button in the lower left corner, you will see to the right of the Search box, a button most likely labelled either Sleep, Restart or Shutdown. However, you may be one of those people (like me) who never shutdown their PC, but either put it into Standby or Hibernate. You can edit this button to be a shortcut to whatever you prefer.

To do this, click on the Start button and then right-click the power button and choose Properties. You will see the Taskbar and Start menu dialog box. Next to Power button action there is a dropdown box with a list of different actions that you can choose from.

Please watch this video for a live demonstration:

Now, all you have to do is make two mouse clicks: one on the Start button and then one on the Power button. Or, using the keyboard press the Windows key, then the right arrow key and the focus will jump right to the Power button. Then hit Enter to perform the action. That’s it!
