Three Smart Thermostats That Deserve Your Attention

With summer just around the corner, many homeowners are dreading the inevitable and expensive utility bills that come with cooling their homes and keeping them comfortable. For most people, a thermostat is just a simple device that is used in a manual fashion to dictate what exact temperature the home should be, but we think that handling both cooling and heating costs should be smarter – and many agree with us. Smart thermostats are becoming increasingly popular as technology facilitates reductions in their prices, while at the same time, energy prices continue to skyrocket. We’ll be taking a look at four of the best smart thermostats currently on the market for you to consider installing in your home this year.

Nest Thermostat

Perhaps the most aesthetic of the four choices, the Nest Thermostat ($249) manages to deliver on both style and substance. Using wireless technology, the Nest device can be accessed remotely – from anywhere in the home or world – allowing users to establish schedules for heating and cooling. After using the included application for a period of time, Nest begins to learn your schedule and can determine the most optimal heating and cooling solutions for your home on its own. This thermostat is perfect for adapting the home to cool down or warm up while on the way home from school or work, and installation only takes a skilled person a few minutes.

Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat

Hitting shelves in May 2013 (just in time for summer), the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat has made it known that it intends to be a direct competitor with the Nest. Starting at the same price ($249), the Honeywell model offers all the same features: scheduled cooling and heating options that learn over time, remote access via Wi-Fi and mobile devices, and an easy-to-navigate interface. The Honeywell, however, offers a full-colour touch screen and customisation options for selecting colours – something the Nest never bothered to do. It is also claimed that the Honeywell is capable of learning your desired cooling and heating schedules in just a few hours rather than days, but time will tell when it debuts next month. Regardless, we are sure that this Honeywell product will follow in the footsteps of many other Honeywell products and earn a solid reputation for itself.

Ecobee Smart Thermostat

The Ecobee Smart Thermostat ($299) is a solid competitor against the Nest and Honeywell thermostats, offering all the features you would expect as well as a couple of extra ones. When connected via Wi-Fi, the Ecobee will scan weather reports and adjust your cooling and heating to save the maximum amount of energy possible. Creating a schedule for this thermostat takes no time at all, and like the others, it can be accessed from anywhere in the world using any smart phone, tablet or PC.  The large touchscreen makes it easy to access usage details, scheduling and weather reports – who knew a thermostat could be so versatile? Users of Ecobee’s thermostat report an average saving of 25% on cooling costs and 20% on heating costs, making it a sound investment that will soon pay for itself.
