An Alternative to Telephone Support

Posted by: James | Comments (1)

The other day, the area in which I live was hit by a fairly nasty winter storm: snow, freezing rain, more snow, then wind resulting in downed power lines and intermittent power outages. We also found one morning our telephone had no dial tone and the Internet was inaccessible. Oh no!

Remaining calm, I rebooted the high-speed modem as well as the home phone modem (we subscribe to both through a cable company). Still nothing happening. So, how to reach support if you cannot call or send an email?

I had to work that day, and my wife was off and kept her cellular phone handy. Upon reaching work I called the toll-free support line only to hear that they were ‘experiencing a higher than normal call volume’. No surprise there. I don’t have a desk-type job, so I could not stay on hold for any great length of time. Fortunately, I do work in the vicinity of PCs, so I thought I would look at my ISP’s website to see if there was any information on local issues posted there. Since it is a national carrier, again, I was not surprised to find nothing regarding my area.

Then I noticed something on their support site. Read More→

Review: Acronis Backup and Security 2010

Posted by: James | Comments (1)

Acronis: Compute with Confidence
I was quite excited to hear that Acronis has entered into the security software market with three new products (see “Acronis Enters the Security Market”). Acronis has built up an excellent brand in the Home and Enterprise backup software market. Indeed, I have used Acronis for years with no problems. It is extremely reliable software. So it was no surprise that they would attempt to diversify by taking the next logical step: security software.

Specifically, the three new programs are:

  1. Acronis Backup and Security 2010
  2. Acronis Internet Security Suite 2010
  3. Acronis Antivirus

For the purposes of this brief review, Acronis has kindly supplied a complimentary copy of Acronis Backup and Security 2010 (ABS). Read More→

Hello, Windows 7!

Posted by: James | Comments (2)

“Sweet dreams are made of these/who am I to disagree?”

Well, it didn’t take long..2.5 weeks in fact, before Windows 7 finds itself once again on my trusty Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 (See “Goodbye, Windows 7”).

What happened?

256As the saying goes: ‘Life Happens’. By that I mean certain issues arose, likely of my doing, but in the end necessity won the day and Windows 7 Professional is back, up and running. And running nicely, I should add, but doesn’t every fresh install seem to be the fastest ever? Windows XP was running fine, but something was grinding it to a halt.

Was it a program? Was it one of the numerous tweaks I applied?

Deleting Your Google Search History

Posted by: James | Comments (0)

By Richard Tyler C (Contributed)

You probably use Google to search the Internet. Did you know that Google, and your browser, maintain a history of your Internet activities? In this article, we will take a look at why you want to remove this history and how to do it.

Most people do not know that their Internet activities are logged. These activities are ostensibly logged for your convenience. For example, if you have visited a page in the past, your browser maintains this information so that you do not need to type the whole website URL again.

Or in other cases, you may have typed something into the Google search box. These searches are maintained by Google to present you with similar searches if you happen to be looking for the same thing in the future. In fact, Google combines your previous searches with their own database to try to provide you with the optimal results.

However, what will happen if someone logs into your computer? Can they see your previous Internet activities? Read More→

Review: Acronis True Image Home 2010

Posted by: James | Comments (5)

I’m willing to bet that in any review of an Acronis True Image product, the term ‘saved my bacon’ or saved my a**’ will come up. This review is no different, for it is true. I have used Acronis True Image for many, many years on almost all versions of Windows with great satisfaction. One of the true great feelings in the computing world is knowing your data is safe and you can restore it (or Windows) in a few minutes and be up and running. It’s hard to put a price on satisfaction like that!

I have been a bit late in getting around to upgrading to Acronis True Image Home 2010 (herein referred to as ATIH2010) due to a number of factors, mainly time. I wanted to take the time to see what was different, what was new, etc. Now, the following is by no means an exhaustive review of ATIH2010, but I want to highlight the features I like and use most and how these tasks are easier to perform in this new version.

So, let’s begin!

2 Effective storage of your computer data is directly tied to the way you assign names to files. Knowing how the computer sorts files based on the date format is also a huge time saver. No one teaches us this, so we need to get it somewhere. This is the place! Having a reliable system that you use consistently throughout your computer will save the average person literally hundreds of hours annually.

Microsoft Office Online (2003) says: “Statistics show that you can reduce the amount of time you spend finding and filing data by as much as 50 minutes a day by having an effective reference system in place.” [The direct link to this quote is provided at the bottom of this article.]

That’s a whopping 300 hours a year! (Above, when I said “hundreds of hours,” you thought I was exaggerating, didn’t you?)

So it’s worth taking the time to implement a strong computer filing system.
