Will Windows 8 Squash the iPad 3?

The newest edition of the iPad is widely anticipated – especially as the demand for tablet notebooks continues to grow for everyday purposes like textbooks, medical diagnostics, and even convenient flight logs for pilots. The iPad continues to improve and make impressive changes, including more advanced capabilities with the introduction of new apps.

It’s rumored that Apple will introduce iPad 3 in March 2012. Fans of the iPad can expect more of a good thing, like enhanced high-res display, better graphic performance, and Siri capabilities.

For those anticipating the release of the latest iPad notebook, you may be asking yourself if it’s possible to have too much of a good thing?

The competing Windows 8 tablets are expected to be released by the end of 2012 and may give the iPad 3 a run for its money.

However, in order for the same iPad apps to be compatible with the Windows 8 tablet, rewriting is necessary for the crossover. Industry experts estimate that Windows 8 based hardware won’t likely become mainstream until early 2013. This indicates that even though the Windows 8 tablet is likely to be a large competitor of the iPad 3, iPad 3 sales won’t likely be affected in 2012.

Nonetheless, there are still a few competitive features that give the Windows 8 tablet an edge over the iPad 3:

  • Dual-purpose capabilities. While the iPad is popular for a reason, Microsoft plans to corner the market by making the Windows 8 tablet a desktop capable device. This means that the convenient tablet can also be used as a proper PC with keyboard and mouse capabilities.
  • Metro interface. The newest interface available from Microsoft is Metro, which has received rave reviews from users thus far. For that reason alone, many people may opt for a Windows 8 tablet over an iPad in order to use Metro instead of iOS.
  • Beaming content. Microsoft is currently working on the technology to beam content from a Windows 8 tablet to a Windows Phone 8, enabling a user to transfer content from a tablet to a PC or a phone through a wireless connection, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi direct. That alone may be enough for users to choose the Windows 8 tablet over the iPad thanks to its impressive content streaming capabilities.

Last but not least, we can’t overlook the corporate appeal of the Windows 8 tablet. Apple hasn’t yet cornered the large corporate market, which is a business niche that Microsoft is quite comfortable in. Small to large corporations may choose to use the Windows 8 tablet since it can connect securely to PC systems that are already in place within their companies.

In my opinion it is a do or die for Windows and Nokia alliance in case of Mobile devices. And in the case of Tablets we all know who is the leader though it is a two horse race. microsoft’s metro interface is just different from Apple and android based User interface but that doesn;t really mean it is better or customer’s can be propelled towards it. Most probably for being the First I device without designed without the influence of late steve jobs a lot is expected from the others at apple. Lets see if ipad 3 continues its legacy or it turns out to be a blooper but still i shall boldly say Windows 8 is not gonna-be the ipad Killer.Cheers.

I seriously hope the new iPad 3 release is pushed out way past March 2012. Having just gotten me an iPad 2 for Christmas, there is no way she will let me bin it for a new model. I know I don’t have to get the new one but I always find that you fall out of love with your Apple devices as soon as a new one comes online. The Windows 8 tablets sound like they’ll certainly be worth a look.

  6. I have a feeling that the Windows 8 tablets will compete with the iPad at some point, especially when it comes to corporate use. Apple, and its iPad, will continue to be a top tablet though. As long as Apple keeps putting out quality products, the iPad will continue to keep its core audience. The app store is such a huge advantage right now as well for Apple and will be tough to compete with.

I’m looking forward to see what Windows 8 delivers to tablets. It’s really only a 2 horse race at the moment between Android tablets and the iPad so there’s room for another true contender. The key will be the eco-system and getting lots of games and apps developed that are specifically designed for touch control and the tablet format. There’s millions of apps for Windows but most don’t transition well as the interface is designed around a precise mouse or trackpad click. If the development community gets behind Windows 8 for tablets then it’s definitely got to be a contender.

I also think the Windows 8 can do well hen it comes to comes to corporate use. Most companyes uses windows on theyr regular computers, so a windows tab shoud integrate better with existing programs. That said, I am not sure why companies shoud og for tablets, when they can use cheaper and better(in tech specs) 10″ laptops.
I defently prefer a small laptop when it comes to work, Ipads and tablets are best for games and entertainment..

  11. This was really interesting to read. I had no idea Windows was set to release an iPad competitor with Windows 8. To me, the main drawback of the iPad is the price. Apple products are always so expensive, which doesn’t really make them a viable choice for large corporations who need to purchase large amounts of computers. Windows is great because it can run on all sorts of different PC’s, which means you can get a cheaper computer that still runs great and fits your needs. If the Windows tablets have a user-friendly interface and capabilities that match the iPad, AND there are cheaper models, I think it could definitely be an iPad killer. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open.

For that we must to wait for March 2012, I do agree with you Karen, Apple and Windows both belong to different class of people, and both are very successful among their classes, But still i am curious what new both are offering this time. Excellent post.

  14. This is the first I am hearing about the Ipad 3, all I want from apple is flash capabilities. If windows has it that’s where I will go. I can’t stand ,my Ipad 2 for that reason.

I wonder how windows 8 will work for Microsoft. People have just familiarize themselves with windows 7.

  16. Julie says:

Although the forthcoming windows OS seems to be genial, I won’t think that it would squash the iOS. It will take a few years until every tablets were installed with the new windows. Android tablets and iPads are widely used on the market, the new one must be pretty much better to take advantage on them.

  17. hmmm.. I doubt it. Apple is also doing a major upgrade on iPad 3 especially on its processing powers.

  18. Interesting angle on the corporate market being an opportunity for the Windows 8 tablets. Microsoft are really playing catchup here but at the right price point and if they can get enough apps developed they may just still be able to compete with the established IOS and Android devices. Hopefully they’ll come up with a better marketing campaign than they did for Windows 7!

  19. I have used it a lot. It’s incredibly jarring to be panning side to side in the metro interface, clicking on full-screen apps (monotasking…what a blast from the past), only to suddenly spin right back into the familiar desktop we all know.

    It’s rather inconsistent design.

  20. That’s an interesting idea. But I think, Windows 8 won’t be able to squash the iPad 3. Maybe at the least, they will be at around the same position of market share. But for one win from the other, I think it will be a very tight match. Interesting to see thou.

  21. An exciting battle of tablet OS :) But on my opinion, many folks will still choose iPad3, the iOS, because of the apps available on the app store. They can get a market share but they can’t totally dominate or even stay on top of the iDevices.

I think the dual purpose aspects will make Windows 8 desirable especially since so many desktop computers already run on windows.

The beaming feature does look cool but because of how many people have iphones I don’t think this will be as big of a selling feature as it could be.

If Microsoft do it right then they could be on to a winner though, but only time will tell.
