Review: KineticD Online Backup Service

(Thanks to the good folks at KineticD for supplying me with a test account for the purposes of this review)
An online backup is probably one of the safest, if not the safest backup option. Your files are stored offsite, so if anything should happen to your computer(s) at home or place of business your files are still safe and with online continuous backup, the most recent version is available via an Internet connection.

The KineticD service (formerly Data Deposit Box) primarily targeted at SMBs and consumers.

An account is easy to setup: simply use the activation link in the email you will receive, set a password, and then download the KineticSecure client-side software. There is also a Mac version. During setup, you are asked which files you want to backup, such as documents, Outlook email, and other standard user folders. You can uncheck the ones you do not want to have backed up, and you can always change these settings later.

Once the software is installed, it gets right to work, as indicated by a small icon in the notification area (see red arrow):

15-12-2010 5-13-49 PM

You can click on the icon to get a visual of what is being backed up (uploaded to the KineticD secure servers) and track progress:

15-12-2010 5-14-49 PM

Depending on the amount of files you have (and your upload speed), the initial backup could take a good amount of time, but subsequent backups of any changed files will be practically invisible to the user.

Other options that you can tweak are:

  • adding other folders/locations
  • # of versions to save
  • minimum time delay between versions (12 or 24 hours)
  • bandwidth/CPU allocation
  • block out certain days & hours when you do not want the backup to run
  • many others

There is also an option to install the Open File Driver which allows online backup of open files such as the Outlook .pst file without having to close Outlook. This driver can be installed (or removed) with one click in the options panel. All your files are protected using 448 bit Blowfish Bank Grade Encryption, the same standard used by banks to secure critical information. (This standard has never, ever, been cracked.) Your files are encrypted before they even leave your PC, and stored in the KineticD data center.

Finally, here is a look at the KineticD web portal in Internet Explorer:

It took a little over two hours to upload 218MB of data on my Internet connection. Upload speeds varied somewhat and of course, “your mileage may vary” (YMMV)!

If you are looking for a good, reliable online backup solution for home, home office or small business, I would recommend you consider KineticD. You can get a 14 day free trial of their services so you can see for yourself how easy and convenient online backups can be.
