Acronis® Drive Monitor™ provides an early warning of drive malfunction that can make all the difference between the data you have and the data you could potentially lose. It also encourages you to secure your data it by backing it up with Acronis True Image Home 2010.
I installed this software on my laptop with no problems and it immediately alerted me to the fact that I have a bad sector on my hard disk (which I already knew about). It also provides temperature warnings, and the limits can be manually adjusted to whatever values you prefer. Here are some actual screen shots from my laptop (click to see enlarged image):
