Many people have a desktop, laptop, and even work computers. These computers have different settings on various applications. Each experience is quite different because settings are changed especially while in the browser. There are some tools that one can use to help keep the browser settings synced between computers. These tools, while versions may be available from other browsers, are explained from the context of the Firefox browser since so many add ons help with the syncing abilities.
Bookmarks are one of the main pieces of data between machines that a user might want access to. While there are online bookmarking services that can be logged into to keep the data in the cloud, there is also a desktop application that helps with the same issues in Firefox. This is called Xmarks. The idea is that when bookmarks are added to your browser, it will sync with the ones stored online. When logging in from another location like work for example, the new bookmarks will be downloaded to the system syncing them.
Other bits of data are logins and passwords. Note that using a service or add on to sync your stored login data isn’t the most safe practice, but it is a way of easily getting to your information. Critical things like banking should never be used in this way. There is an add on called LastPass that will let a user sync data between computers through the browser. There are also add-ons that take Firefox’s default password manager to sync between machines.
The benefit of doing this with add-ons is that each browser experience has a similar feel to the one you are used to. You can work with the same settings and data on each machine. Also it makes sense to use browsers this way since it is the internet and syncing is very easy to do.
There is data in a browser such as settings, bookmarks, and logins that sometimes become fragmented on various machines. There are tools in Firefox to sync this data between computers.
