Review: Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC 2010

Uniblue software has just released new 2010 versions of its three main programs, SpeedUpMyPC (SUMP), Registry Booster (RB) and Driver Scanner (DS). I have previously posted about RB2010 several times, the most recent being this one: http://www.windowstalk.org/2009/10/registry-cleaner-for-windows-7/

SUMP2010 is a nice little tune-up style program that is quick and easy to use, and you will likely see benefits right away, depending on how clean (or congested) your present system is. You may not like some of its solutions, but you can choose to turn them off. More about this later.

Let’s begin with a look at the main interface. Here’s an actual screen capture of SUMP2010 from my laptop after installing, registering and running the initial scan:

As you can see, SUMP2010 found over 3600 possible improvements!

After clicking the ‘Speed up now’ button, SUMP2010 quickly got to work implementing all those improvements. (If you prefer, now is the time to set a system restore point, or create an image of your Windows partition. As with any program that makes changes to Windows settings, care should be taken.)

Here’s the result:

I like the little weather gauge on the left, showing you at a glance the condition of your system. It’s all sunshine now!

I mentioned earlier about not liking some of SUMP2010′s solutions. One was that it turns off ClearType (the smooth edging of screen fonts) by default:

This I did not like, since it makes text harder to read onscreen, and the system resources it uses would be minimal anyway. However, as I said, you can choose to have SUMP2010 to skip it for future scans, as shown above. The other default setting I chose to change is the deletion of files in the recent items list:

The recent items list is a list Windows keeps to make it more convenient to open files that you have recently worked on more quickly. I especially find this Windows 7 feature useful for programs I have ‘pinned’ in the Taskbar. For example, if you right-click the Internet Explorer icon, you will see a list of recently visited sites. Click on one to go directly to that site.

I should also mention that there is an Undo section where you can undo any or all of SUMP2010′s performance improvements:

Overall, SUMP2010 is a great little speed-up program for your PC. There are other ones on the market that dive deeper into every little Windows setting, but I would recommend them only to those that are comfortable using them, and know how to restore their systems in case of any problems such programs may case.

As with all of Uniblue’s software, you can use SpeedUpMyPC 2010 with confidence, and it is one of my ‘recommended’ programs.

SUMP2010 can be installed in up to 3 PCs and has a 30-day money back guarantee. Runs on XP/Vista/Windows 7
