So you have a DVD you absolutely love and want to make a backup copy of it? It’s easy enough to do and can cost you nothing, except the price of a blank DVD. First and foremost, you need to be sure you have plenty of hard drive space to hold the entire DVD (or the parts you want to burn). Usually, this runs about 4GB, give or take a gig. You will also need a DVD burner and a blank DVD-R. Oh, and you’ll need a program to rip, recode and burn the final DVD.
First, you’ll need to open the video files, found in a folder on the DVD, usually named VIDEO_TS. Rip (copy) the files inside this folder to your hard drive. Some DVDs will have protection from duplicating built in, however you can bypass this protection by using a program such as AnyDVD.
Next, you will need to choose which files you want on your copied DVD. Some people prefer to only copy the movie and not the previews, subtitles or extra features. This just makes for a quicker burn and a cleaner copy in the end. When you’ve created your compilation, the program will then need to recode the files so that you can copy and use them in a DVD player. Depending on the size of the original DVD and how much of it you choose to put on your copy, the program may have to compress the files so that they all fit on the final DVD.
Once the program has completed its compression and re-encoded the movie according to your specifications, you’re ready to burn! Place a DVD-R in your burner, choose what quality you would like to burn and at what speed and the program will do the rest. Finally, you have a backup copy of your DVD!
While making a backup copy may sound a bit complicated, if you use the right program, it is really just a few clicks of your mouse. DVD Shrink is a great example of an easy to use DVD copy program that walks you through the process and burns a custom-configured DVD in just a few minutes!
