Connecting Your Laptop to Your TV – It’s Easy and Inexpensive

Many people are looking for ways to connect their laptops to their TVs. It’s actually very easy and inexpensive to connect your laptop to your TV. In this article, we will look at why you may want to do this and how you can accomplish it.

The reasons for wanting to connect your laptop to your new TV are many. Rather than simply outlining each one, I will tell you the story of my Barbara.

Barbara invited me over to watch the Oscar winning movie “The Hurt Locker” last week. We watch movies at Barbara’s house because she has the best LCD TV among all of our friends. Before the movie, Barbara and I sat down to enjoy a cup of coffee and talk.

While we were sharing this cup of coffee, the doorbell rang and it was a delivery man from Amazon.

Barbara said, “Oh, this is probably my new computer monitor that I ordered so that I do not have to use my small laptop screen. You’ll have to help me set it up.”

After we brought in the new monitor, I said to Barbara, “Let’s not unbox this just yet, Barbara. Tell me what you are going to use this for.”

“Well,” she said, “I like to download movies from NetFlix and I was tired of watching them on my little laptop screen.”

Many people do exactly what Barbara had just done. They buy a second monitor for their laptop when they already have a better second monitor in there house: their LCD TV.

I told Barbara that she could use her beautiful 52 inch LCD TV as a monitor for her laptop and she just about hit the floor. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” she said, “I can use my LCD TV as a laptop monitor?”

With this question, I explained to her how it is done.

To connect a laptop computer to a TV, you essentially have 4 options. You can connect your computer to your TV using an S-Video cable, a VGA cable, a DVI cable, or an HDMI cable.

“In your case,” I said to Barbara, “you have one of the latest top rated netbooks with HDMI capability so you should use HDMI which is the newest and most robust standard.”

“Yeah,” she asked curiously, “and how much is that going to cost me?”

“About $10,” I respond.

With that, Barbara realized that she did not need to spend $300 on a 32 inch LCD Monitor for her laptop and she promptly returned it.

We got Barbara an HDMI cable for $10 and connected her laptop to her 52 inch LCD TV in a matter of moments.
