Goodbye, Windows 7…One Week Later

By James

Well, it has been one week since erasing Windows 7 off my Dell laptop’s hard drive and restoring Windows XP. How has it been, using Windows XP you ask?

Simply put, a real joy.

There have been a few Windows updates in the past week, and no issue with update MS10-015 so far. I have been burning CDs, playing movies, composing posts, downloading, uploading, browsing the ‘Net all with great speed and agility. Of course, as some commentors have pointed out, my aging Dell laptop is due for a replacement, and nothing would please me more, but present finances do not allow it, unfortunately. My RAM is maxed out at 2GB, so that cannot be upgraded any further.

There have been some interesting posts this past week over at ZDNet.com:

  1. 7 reasons to move on from ageing, tired Windows XP by Zack Whittaker, which was wriiten in response to:
  2. 7 reasons to stick with Windows XP by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes who makes a good argument for staying put with XP.

While I would never discourage anyone from upgrading to Windows 7, I would give this advice:

  • check your present system’s specs: will it run Windows 7 acceptably? Download the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to be sure.
  • ask yourself if you see any clear advantage to upgrading. Will you get more bang for your buck? Do you need the new features of Windows 7?
  • is your present system up to date, with all security patches in place? Not just Windows, but all your installed software? Secunia PSI is an excellent free program to check all your installed software for updates.
  • do a Disk Cleanup and Defragment. Cleaning up temporary files and defragmenting may restore a little pep to your XP system. Look for these Windows tools under Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
  • how about a Windows XP reinstall? Over time, you have likely installed & uninstalled lots of software, leaving your system ‘clogged up’ with useless files and registry entries. A complete reinstall (after a complete backup of all your files, of course) may be just the prescription for a faster system. Click Here to Run a Free Scan for registry errors

Of course, the above suggeations also go for windows Vista, if you are using it at the present time. So, for the time being, I will stick with XP.
