Tweak ClearType in Windows 7

email

356 ClearType is a software technology developed by Microsoft that improves the readability of text on existing LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), such as laptop screens, Pocket PC screens and flat panel monitors. With ClearType font technology, the words on your computer screen look almost as sharp and clear as those printed on a piece of paper.

Here’s how to tweak the ClearType settings in Windows 7:

Probably the quickest way to get to the ClearType settings is to right-click any area of your desktop and then click ‘Personalize’. If you didn’t know this already, this is where you can customize your Windows 7 themes. :)

Now, look to the lower left of the Personalization box and you will see the word ‘Display’ under See also.

Clicking ‘Display’ will open (oddly enough) the Display properties window:

Now, click on ‘Adjust ClearType text. This will open the ClearType Text Tuner Wizard:

Now, just follow the wizard as it prompts you to make certain choices from sample texts as to what looks best on your screen. Click ‘Finish’ when you are done to apply the changes you have made.

That’s it! To learn more about ClearType, Visit the Microsoft Typography page here. There is also a ClearType Tuner PowerToy for XP/Vista here.
