Recover Computer With Hidden Recovery Partition

HDD1 (2) Many new laptops and PCs do not come with a copy of their operating system. These computers will prompt you to create recovery disks when you first receive the system. Disaster strikes when the operating system fails and the recovery disks were never created.

Do not panic yet! A majority of PCs and laptops come with a hidden, fail safe recovery partition. The partition will allow you to put your computer back into the original state you received it in. All of your files will be deleted so make sure you back all of your documents up. Everything you have ever installed on the PC will be gone. Be ready to re-install all of your applications once this procedure is completed.

When you have prepared your PC to have all of the information on it wiped clean, you will need to figure out what keyboard key loads your recovery partition. You can do this with a simple Google search. Type in your PC or laptop model followed by ” recovery partition”. For example, the key code for the HP DX 2300 is F10. After locating this key you will restart the computer. You will need to press the key that activates the recovery partition as soon as you see anything on your monitor after the computer restarts. The first screen you typically see will be what is called a splash screen. This screen is usually a graphical picture of your computer manufacturer. You may need to continuously hit the key to make the computer start the recovery process. The timing of the keystroke will determine if the recovery starts.

Once this process has been started you will be guided through recovery by automated prompt screens. After it is completed your computer will be restored to the factory condition that you originally received it in. At this point you will add your backed up files and re-install your applications. To prevent your operating system from crashing again you should run real time antivirus software that automatically keeps you updated on the newest virus definitions.

  1. This only works if it is the O.S and not the Hard Drive at fault.
